How to select a good idea for your research?

Updated: Jun 29, 2021

A research is a set of systematic, critical and empirical processes that are applied to the study of phenomenon or problem. There are two research approaches: quantitative and qualitative. Some research strategies:

1.Observation and evaluation of phenomena

2.Establish assumptions or ideas

3.Demonstrate the fundaments of the assumption.

4.Review the assumptions based on evidence or analysis.

5.Propose observations to modify assumptions

Research projects start with ideas that should:

• Help solve problems

• Provide knowledge

• Generate questions

And should be:

• Novelty

• Encouraging

• Exciting

• Inspiring

The sources of the ideas are:

Experiences

• Written materials

• Audiovisual materials

• Theories

• Conversations

• Internet

It is necessary to seek information on the initial ideas to become familiar with them and gain more knowledge.

For example:

Idea: Investigation about the topic of mental illnesses

find information about:

What is mental illness

types of mental illness

Which of the mental illnesses I am going to investigate?

Criteria for generating good ideas:

1.That the idea stimulates the researcher in a personal way - that the idea is interesting or necessary.

2. The idea does not necessarily have to be new, but it must be novel - previous studies are updated.

3. That the idea serves to elaborate theories or solve problems - a good idea helps us formulate or test theories.

4. A good idea can create new questions - answers are found but more questions are also generated.
